Nicklas Larsson has produced new binaries for GRASS 8.5.0 stable release.

Although they compile without issue, we have had reports of the Intel binary produced here may have trouble running on Intel Macs. If you have an old Intel Mac and run into problems, you might be able to compile it yourself have have it run for you.

For any of you who would like to try to compile 8.5.0 on your own, Nicklas has now included build instructions in the GRASS source code so that anyone can pretty easily compile the latest version. See the updated download page for instructions on how to do this.

“Official” Mac apps are “signed” and “notarized” by Apple to help users avoid problem software or malware. This requires a paid signing key, and using this key is complicated outside of Apple’s XCode development environment. OSGEO has a signing key, but because GRASS is not compiled in the XCode environment, we have not been able to apply it (or at least I was unable to find a way to do so). This did not present serious problems in the past, though it sometimes made initially launching GRASS a bit of a pain.

However, with the new Mac OS 15 (Sequoia) upgrade the lack of signing the GRASS app became a more serious problem, generating a bogus error that the app is damaged for any new or upgraded installation. Fortunately, Nicklas Larsson found a workaround terminal command, which I added to the GRASS installation instructions in December 2024. Then he has worked out a way to officially sign and notarize the GRASS Mac apps so we no longer will have problems arising from an unsigned app. Regularizing this protocol is still a little ad hoc, but Nicklas is working on refactoring Mac compiling within the GRASS Github repo to make it easier for all. In the meantime, we’ll work together to continue to make the most up to date versions of GRASS available for Mac users.

I’ve posted the new signed apps that Nicklas generated for you to enjoy. Happy GRASSing!

“Official” Mac apps are “signed” and “notarized” by Apple to help users avoid problem software or malware.
GRASS 8.4.0 was release a few days ago. I’ve posted new binaries for both Apple ARM and Intel processors.

A couple of improvements I especially want to note. A new GUI tools allows you to see and access a history of all of the commands you’ve issued (through the GUI or console) to modify and reuse them. This should simplify repetitive tasks. An important change in GRASS terminology now shows up in the GUI. The legacy term “location” referred to a folder/directory which stored the projection and coordinate reference system (CRS) for a set of maps, along with the folders/directories in which groups of maps are stored (“mapsets”). A confusing term for new users, “location” is now being replaced by the term “project”.

Information on all enhancements and fixes can be found at: https://github.com/OSGeo/grass/releases

I just posted new preview builds of GRASS 8.3.2 release candidate 1. There are a number of bug fixes and enhancements of course.

Thanks to Nicklas Larsson, the newest ARM build no longer needs Rosetta (Intel processor emulator) to launch. As a fully ARM native app, it also runs significantly faster than before.

We remain on track for releasing GRASS 8.3.2 in the next month and hopefully 8.4.0 by April.

I just posted new preview builds of GRASS 8.3.2 release candidate 1.
